Tap to Pay - iPhone & Android

Tap to Pay lets you accept contactless payments directly through the Shopify POS app on your phone, without needing a separate card reader. It's a useful backup option or a lightweight alternative for smaller shows.

Availability: Tap to Pay on iPhone is available in the US and UK only. Tap to Pay on Android availability may vary - check with your terrible* contact if you're unsure.

Important: Tap to Pay only works for contactless payments (tap, mobile wallet, smartwatch). For payments that require a card to be swiped or a PIN to be entered, you'll still need a paired card reader.

Setting up Tap to Pay

  1. From Shopify POS, tap ≡ > Settings > Set up hardware
  2. Select Tap to Pay, then tap Next
  3. Tap Done

That's it - Tap to Pay is now enabled and ready to use.

Accepting a payment with Tap to Pay

  1. Add items to the cart and tap Checkout
  2. On the Select payment option screen, tap Tap to Pay on iPhone (or Android)
  3. The Tap to Pay interface will appear, showing where the customer should hold their payment method
  4. Ask the customer to hold their contactless card, phone, or smartwatch over the tap area until the animation confirms the payment is complete and you hear the success sound
  5. Choose whether to send a receipt, then tap Done to return to the products screen
